The Special Air Service was born from the Commando movement and the need for a small, mobile offensive fighting force. Its origins can be traced back to 1940 when the first units were formed under Lt. Col Robert Laycock, and became known as “Layforce”, and assisted the British Forces in North Africa. Although this force was disbanded in 1941, some of its members ultimately formed the SAS.
