The German 12th Waffen SS Panzer Division was one of the 'classic' units and was one of the most renowned German units of WWII. Initially activated in February of 1943, the unit was re-designated the 12th SS Panzer Grenadier Division in October of that year. The division saw most of its combat action in 1944 from Normandy, through France and Belgium where it sustained heavy losses. Through 1945, This division also operated on the Eastern Front until its surrender near Austria in May 1945.
